What to do if you accidentally catch a sturgeon

The European sturgeon is in danger of extinction and is strictly protected. It is of utmost importance that a sturgeon caught by accident be released; its capture should then be declared.
Nevertheless, several species of sturgeon are to be seen in open waters. The Siberian sturgeon, introduced or escaped into fresh water, is today the most frequently observed species. A differentiation form helps to distinguish between the two species based on some morphological criteria. However, if identification is still difficult, the instructions given below should be followed.

All information, however sketchy, that you may be able to give is essential to the understanding of the biology of this migratory fish and the notification of other species of sturgeon in open waters. The steps to be taken as shown below are part of the restoration plan for the European sturgeon.

Instructions to be followed in the case of the accidental capture of a sturgeon: :

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION

Do not hesitate to note further information concerning the accidentally-caught fish before releasing it (observations on its state and general aspect, photographs, etc.) as long as doing so does not affect its chance of survival.

Your declaration will be received and processed by European sturgeon specialists. The information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence.
