The sharing of risk and pooling of means implies a common identification of the basins that would be the most appropriate for repopulation, the drawing up of distribution plans for the same cohort around different basins in different countries, mutual methods used for the management of these reintroduction plans.
Indeed, the development of international cooperation is essential if the European sturgeon is to be saved from extinction, especially given the following elements and biological characteristics:
- the uniqueness of the population of this species,
- its extreme vulnerability in a context of observed and increasing deterioration of the Gironde river and estuary system, - the length of its life cycle, - the sharing of the marine area and the frequentation of this area by users depending on different national authorities, - the efforts to be agreed upon over time in order to restore viable populations, - the duration of studies prior to launching other operations that would enable other populations to be formed |
