Setting up a European database for the European sturgeon would enable the pooling of knowledge concerning:

- the location, accessibility and state of conservation of  historic spawning grounds

- the state of conservation and quality of water in essential sturgeon habitats, other than spawning grounds, and in particular estuary and coastal milieus

- the different measures of protection in effect for these habitats

- by-catch areas at sea and in estuaries.

This database shall, in particular, serve as a basis for common reflection by the different partners on the identification of potential milieus for repopulation within the historic range of the species, by giving priority to possible efforts to be made according to the potential of these basins to form other populations.
