Conservation of the species in its natural environment PDF Print E-mail
One of the priority actions that must be undertaken in a situation of such deterioration of a species consists in reducing the direct factors of mortality impacting the last remaining specimens in the wild.  For the European sturgeon, the conservation of the species in its natural environment depends on two main actions:
the significant reduction of mortality linked to accidental by-catch, in such a way as to obtain an increased number of reproductive adults returning to the spawning grounds, to be achieved by setting up information and awareness campaigns aimed at fisheries and fishermen;
- the controlled introduction of non-native sturgeon species into the European sturgeon’s natural environment should enable the risks of hybridisation and competition with the European sturgeon to be limited and the problems of identification by fishermen to be reduced.

In order to asses the state and development of the species, the monitoring of population indicators must be maintained.  These indicators, based on observations of juveniles in the estuary, enable the existence of natural reproduction to be confirmed in the basin and the success of releasing alevins born from artificial reproductions to be assessed.  Recording declarations of accidental by-catch, which are today the only source of information that allow the marine range of the species to be defined, must be continued.  The presence in open waters of exotic species or hybrid sturgeons, whether they tolerate saline water or not, must also be reported and monitored.
