Actions PDF Print E-mail
The international restoration plan for the European sturgeon, adopted by the Permanent Committee of the Bern Convention in November 2007, anticipates the implementation of different actions that should enable the decline of the species to be reversed and its future to be made safer.  Certain of these actions are already operational, others are to be started – all are to be undertaken over the long term.
These actions are to be made in 4 areas of work that have been taken up by France in anticipation of its national restoration plan for the species :
Area 1: Conservation of the species in its natural environment
Area 2:
Protection and restoration of the essential habitats used by the species
Area 3: Conservation of stock held in captivity and artificial reproduction programmes
Area 4: International cooperation

It is essential that result indicators are set up which enable the efficiency of each action, undertaken at France’s initiative but encouraged throughout Europe, to be regularly assessed.   The monitoring of population(s) and the contribution of each action to the restoration of the European sturgeon seem to be very difficult to asses due to the extent of the species' range, the duration of its life cycle and the sketchy knowledge we have of some periods in its life cycle.  A common methodology between the countries in the migratory fish’s range defining appropriate monitoring schedules must therefore be drawn up.  This will involve not just scientists but also managers of the catchment basins, professional fishermen ( in situ conservation in the broadest sense of the word), and fish farming professions ( ex situ conservation).
